Description

Please see the message below about Great Rivers United Way Board...

Students who serve as directors on the Great Rivers United Way Board of Directors are
volunteers who bring an added dimension to the work of Great Rivers United Way. The
insights of a college student and of that place in life offers a different and nontraditional
perspective to the United Way process. The Student Director will contribute to the
governance of Great Rivers United Way. As a Student Director, the role will focus on the
development of policies that govern the non-profit but take into account what those policies
mean to a student population and the help the agency can provide from a student
perspective.
This involvement is a one-year commitment, but can be renewed by mutual agreement
between the Board and the student and can be up to 3 years, renewed annually. While
Student Directors must decide for themselves the level of involvement they wish to commit
to the United Way, the following items and estimates of annual time commitments are key
areas of requested dedication for this volunteer assignment.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Understand and actively support the mission and objectives of the Great Rivers United Way.
B. Attend meetings of the Board of Directors. [10-25 hours a year; Fourth Thursday at 4:00
p.m. (every month when possible)] A consent agenda and preparatory background materials
are emailed in advance of each meeting. Directors are asked to read all materials in advance
to be prepared to discuss an action item or items for vote.
C. Attend special events when possible. Hopefully 1 out of the 4 offered.
 Pacesetter Kick-off/Day of Caring (lunch, mid- July) Free
 Leadership Social Event (evening, August) Free
 Campaign Kick-off Event (breakfast, September) $1
 Annual Meeting (evening; February) $25-$30
D. Support the United Way through idea sharing and brainstorming on fundraising and
community engagement. The Student Director’s unique perspective of a younger
demographic would offer fresh ideas of fundraising and friend raising.
E. Be open to committee work that looks outside of the current Great Rivers United Way
traditional groupings of finance, development, marketing, etc. How could the Student
Director bring other students to the table as a unique and innovative group of active United
Way volunteers? The Student Director could create and run a new committee, but this is not
mandatory.
F. Provide insights as best possible regarding the atmosphere of college students’ needs and
desires for community engagement. Help to connect to other students within the community
and help to strengthen that connection via volunteer activities and other means of
engagement.
