AAUW’s policy work connects and rallies advocates at the local, state, national, and global levels
to advance our work to empower women and girls. With the member-endorsed Public Policy
Program as our guide, AAUW uses lobbying and grassroots efforts to push forward policies that
break through educational and economic barriers for women.

Internship Description: The primary goal of the internship is to familiarize oneself with the
structure, goals, and strategic mission of AAUW and to be involved in the analysis and
implementation of the various government affairs activities the organization is involved in.

Duties may include:

  • Providing Public Policy chair support and assistance with advocacy events (such as Equal
    Pay Day) as needed.
  • Creating a list of resources for objective political information for young women.
  • Providing data to the AAUW La Crosse branch about current important issues and what
    positions AAUW National has taken on them.
  • Participating in any public policy and government affairs activities and meetings offered in
    WI to see the process in action.
  • Writing public policy blog entries for AAUW La Crosse's website or newsletter.

Desired Skills and academic qualifications:

  • Declared major in Women's Studies, Political Science, Government Relations preferred
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle research assignments, work independently.

Skills and Knowledge to be Gained

  • Ability to condense copious amounts of information into manageable bits for sharing with a
    wider audience
  • Federal, state, and local public policy issues relating to promoting equity and education for
    women.
  • Awareness of national non-profit organizations and national and local policy committees
  • Advocacy strategy.

Remuneration:
$50 per internship, paid at the completion of semester long internship
