Description

We offer Advocacy Trainings three times each year to educate community members and prepare both current and future volunteers for their time here.

We are continuing to hold our Advocacy Training virtually (via Zoom) in a four-part training series, with new information being presented each evening. The dates/times are:

Monday, May 17th 6:00pm-9:00pm

Tuesday, May 18th 6:00pm-9:00pm

Monday, May 24th 6:00pm-9:00pm

Tuesday, May 25th 6:00pm-9:00pm

We believe the topics covered in this training series are beneficial to a wide range of persons, whether you are interested in volunteering someday or are just looking to learn more about victim advocacy, domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking.

Below, you will find some more detailed information about our training:

The training is designed to help volunteers, interns, and community members understand what our agency does, what each advocate’s role is within the organization, and how individuals can be an advocate in their daily lives. Advocates cover topics such as active empathetic listening, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, legal advocacy, and so much more.  Below is a list of knowledge provided at the training.

  • Structure and history of our organization
  • An introductory education on the dynamics of domestic and sexual abuse and human trafficking
  • The important role volunteers and interns fulfill at New Horizons
  • How to maintain boundaries and work with confidential information
  • How victims handle their life experiences
  • The effects of domestic abuse on all classes, cultures, races, and social structures
  • Different types of abuse and the “red flags” in unhealthy relationships
  • How to provide and maintain supportive and non-judgmental advocacy
