Who We Are

Sports Mentorship Academy (SMA) was established in 2008 as a non-profit organization to respond to the growing number of un-tapped potential male students (high risk) that were falling through the cracks at school or are already entangled with the juvenile court system. A major contributing factor was lack of afterschool opportunities for middle and high school untapped potential male students to participate . Research indicates that Black Males are often not permitted to participate in afterschool activities due to academic deficiencies and disruptive behavior (O’Brien & Rollefson, 1195). As a response to these difficult circumstances, it is the focus of the Academy to provide untapped-potential male students(high risk) with a positive environment in which they can learn skills that will assist in their future development and success. At Sports Mentorship Academy, we take the concept of sports and make it… “More than a game!” by using an active learning model called, Trauma Informed Sports Programming & Kinesthetic Activity. This type of learning model, creates an learning environment that focuses on the social skills many of untapped potential students need to learn. In a very real sense we teach them how to RUN! • Recognize the triggers that lead them into conflict • Unlearn actions that stem from caustic emotional responses • Navigate circumstances that will minimize their view of success Coach Andre Crockett is the founder and Executive Director and Coach James "Rob!" Robertson is the Program Director.
